Powerful Pithy Presentation Pointer #2: How To Develop The Framework for Your Presentation
A firm foundation of concrete is poured before a house is built. This supports the entire structure of the house! Without that foundation, the house caves in!
The same principle applies to your presentation! Build your presentation around three (3) building blocks:
- Beginning or Opening
- Middle or Body
- End or Close
Opening
Ask yourself this question, “How will I introduce the information I need to share with this group so that I can grab their attention?”
The first thirty seconds of your presentation are the most important. Grab the attention of the audience, and engage their interest in what you have to say in your speech. For example, you could raise a thought-provoking question, make an interesting or controversial statement, recite a relevant quotation.
Body
Once you have won the attention of the audience, ask yourself, “What key points must this group know when I’m done talking to them?” This is the largest part of your speech!
Your key points could be your positions on an issue that you must convince your audience to accept; or key functions of a new product or service that your group will have to implement after your program; or three (3) fond memories of a loved one given at a eulogy.
Your points should be organized so that related points follow one after the other with each point building upon the previous one!
Attention spans are short! Make a small number of points well!
Closing
Like your Opening, your Closing must be strong! This is your opportunity to:
-
Recap your key points
-
Provide closing thoughts
-
Give your audience a call to action
-
Leave your audience with positive memories of your presentation
-
End with a final emotional thought
Use these concrete building blocks and you are guaranteed to be off to a great presentation start!

“If all my talents and powers were taken from me by some inscrutable providence, and I had my choice of keeping but one, I would unhesitatingly ask to be allowed to keep the power of speaking, for through it, I would quickly recover all the rest.” -Daniel Webster
