Live Better with Willie Jolley: The Most Important Room…For Your Success
The Most Important Room…For Your Success!
By Willie Jolley
I want to ask you a question, in terms of your success and achievement. What room do you think is your most important room?
The answer is, “Your Room for Improvement!”
In my latest book, An Attitude of Excellence, I interviewed many top-level companies and high-level achievers, and found that all have some consistent qualities: developing a mindset to constantly get better, to constantly grow themselves, and to constantly work on improving their performance, at both work and home!
The concept of “improvement or getting better” is not a new concept, but sometimes it can get lost in all the hustle and bustle of our daily activities. To make a commitment to improvement or to get better is one of the most critical elements to long-term success and achievement!
When I was fired from my job as a singer, I finally came to the realization that I needed to change, and needed to do some things I had been afraid to do. After working hard to build my employer’s business and help him make money…I got fired! It was not personal, it was simply business. He needed to improve his return on investment. I got angry. But soon thereafter, I read an article that said, “Sometimes a success is a failure, who gets angry enough to overcome their self limiting fears!”
I realized I had to go to work, to work on improving myself! I started a process of asking myself some questions. Every day I asked myself a series of questions to help me focus on keeping the main things, the main things! I reminded myself daily, “Willie, if you want better children, you must be a better parent! If you want better relationships, you must be a better partner! And if you want better success in your life, you must continue to work on being a better Willie!” I made a commitment to constantly improve, and it changed my life!
This concept is often called the C.A.N.E.I. concept…Constant and Never Ending Improvement! Those who make the commitment to constantly improve are those who see the greatest long-term success in their personal and professional results!
To get better means to make a commitment to continue to work on yourself daily. Read or listen to something positive each and every day. I recommend you visit my website and listen to some of our motivational minute messages. They are designed to give daily motivation, inspiration and information. Also get a copy of my book, It Only Takes A Minute To Change Your Life, which has over 200 daily messages that can be read in a minute. If you cannot do either of these, I recommend you dust off your Bible and read a proverb every day. There are 31 Proverbs in the book of Proverbs, one for every day of the month!
Next, I recommend you use your commute time as growth and develop time. GROW while you GO! Use your car or commute time as a rolling university. I like to ask people in my audiences, “What is your usual commute time”. The answer is that the average commute time is one hour per day! I share that a study was done which estimated the commute time of an average person over their work life, and with an average commute of an hour per day over a 40 year period, that came up to 7 years of commuting! Imagine if you used that time to improve, to study, and to grow. You could become a nuclear physicist!
So the question, “what room do you think is your most important room?” sounds like a trick question, but in reality, it is a tremendously serious question and has a serious impact on your long-term success and achievement!
Focus on that most important room…the room for improvement! It can and will change your life! God Bless!
