Thank God, Because His Timing Is Much Better Than Mine!

Last week was an incredible week in my life. I spoke in Anaheim, CA for two major events. On Sunday for both services at the world famous Crystal Cathedral, and on Monday for over 7,000 members of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT). What was most amazing is that I was not pursuing either event…at least not then!
For many years, I wanted to be interviewed on The Hour of Power program with Dr. Robert Schuler. I had spoken at the Crystal Cathedral about 15 years ago for the Men’s Conference; but never appeared on The Hour of Power. I had sent my books and videos to the guest coordinator, but never got an invitation to be interviewed.
In addition, for years I tried to get on the main platform of MDRT. I sent my package to the selection committee year, after year, to no avail. I would always get the rejection letter with a nice “Sorry, but you were not chosen. Thank you for submitting your materials!” I stopped sending materials because the people I knew had left.
Then this year, I get a call from my old friend Greg Owen, my booking agent in Australia who is a former member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT). He had submitted my name for consideration. And MDRT had responded with a “Yes, we would love to have Willie Jolley speak for this year’s meeting in Anaheim!” I was amazed! Then I discovered I was chosen to be the closing speaker on the first day of the conference, on Monday June 11th.
About 3 weeks earlier, I had gotten a call from Les Brown. He had just been interviewed on the Hour of Power and had seen our speaker buddy, Danny Cox, while at the Crystal Cathedral (where Danny and his wife Teddy worship). I called Danny and told him I would be in Anaheim on Saturday through Tuesday and wanted to go to church with him. Danny called the folks at the Cathedral and mentioned I would be in town. They remembered me from when I had spoken at The Men’s Conference, and asked if I would be willing to be the morning worship speaker. Of course I said, “Absolutely!”
Here is the real kicker. The day I spoke at the Cathedral was a very tough day for their congregation. It was the day after the announcement that the name of the church would change and that the present congregation would switch sites with a Catholic congregation down the street. That Catholic Church had bought the campus! It was a day that God knew they would need to hear my message, that A Setback Is A Setup For A Comeback! And the response from the people in the audience was incredible!!!!!
Finally, I say again, Thank God for his timing is better than mine! The reason is that if I had spoken years ago at the Million Dollar Round Table (like I wanted), it would have been in another city, not at the Anaheim Convention Center, which is literally around the corner from the Crystal Cathedral. And I would not have been in a position to speak to the hearts and minds of people at a time when they needed my message the most.
Both events turned out to be fantastic experiences, where people were inspired and encouraged. And I lived out my mission statement, which is “to inspire and encourage people to rise above their circumstances and maximize their God Given Abilities!” This experience reminded me that I can make plans, but God’s timing is always better than mine, because God can see around the corner, and I can’t! Thank God, because God’s timing is much better than mine!
The lesson from this experience is something I have been telling people for years, and is the title of my next book…”Work Hard, Work Smart, But Most Importantly Trust God!”
